A laundry process in which jeans are blasted with sand in order to make the jeans look as if they’ve been worn.

sanding

A denim finishing process in which fabrics are sanded with sandpaper to make the surface soft.

selvedge

The reinforced edge of a bolt of denim fabric, which is woven so that it won't unravel; this super-durable edging is now highly desirable when making couture jeans.

slim cut

Regardless of the leg or waistband, the look is very sleek and slim.

slubby

A term applied to cotton yarn that is less smooth, more textured with nubs and character.

spinning

The process in which cotton is twisted together to form threads or yarns suitable for weaving into cloth.

staple

The measurement of length in a cotton fibre. The longer the staple, the higher the quality.

stitch count

The number of stitches per inch on the seam of the jeans. At 12 stitches per inch takes longer to sew and uses more thread than, say, 8 stitches per inch, but makes the seam stronger.

stone wash

Stones - pumice stones - put in the wash to soften the fabric. Now enzymes, sand, ceramic balls and other methods are used to give jeans their worn look.

sundries

Adornments like metal rivets, Swarovski crystals and decorative stitching on the back pocket.

tear-n-repair

An aging technique that involves taking a screwdriver or other tool and tearing small holes in the jeans then sewing them closed.

twill left-hand

The weave runs left, diagonally, resulting in a softer, loftier feel. A more intricate process that produces a more supple product than right-hand twill. Left-weave.

twill right-hand

Fabric woven to the right. Using uniform yarns, this weave is considered more rugged.

vintage look

Whiskers (worn, lighter marks radiating out from the crotch), worn patches on backside. light washes

warp

Threads that run lengthwise in a fabric.

wash

The colour and texture produced by the finishing process of washing the jean; creates varying results, such as an aged appearance or enhanced softness and can include applying coloured dye and resin.

weft

Threads that run horizontally in a fabric.

weight

The weight of the denim. Approximately 8 ounces is a breezy, cotton-y fabric; 14 ounces is on the hefty side.

whiskers

The flattering wrinkles around the crotch of the jeans. Sometimes behind the knees, too; called a "moustache" in Europe.

yarn dyed

A dyeing process in which the yarns are dyed and then woven or knitted to make fabric.
