The qualities of a
fabric experienced through a sense of touch. Properties like
softness, crispness, dryness and silkiness all describe the hand
of the fabric. The feel of the denim, from soft to coarse. |
|
hand tacking |
Hand sewing tucks
and flaps on garments to ensure that some areas fade less during
washing. |
|
indigo |
A deep blue-violet
dye, used to give denim its desired colour. |
|
inseam |
The seam in a
trouser or short that runs from the crotch to the hem. Leg
length is measured based on the inseam. |
|
jeans |
A sturdy cotton
twill fabric typically woven with an indigo blue yarn and grey
or mottled white yarn, or trouser/pants made from this fabric. |
|
low-rise |
Anywhere from an
inch or so below the belly button to really low (like about six
inches from the crotch to the waistband!) A way to show off
pierced navels and tattoos. |
|
mercerized |
A wet finishing
process swells the yarns of the fabric to give it a round smooth
surface. This process results in a stronger and more lustrous
yarn that is more easily dyed, producing brighter, deeper
colours |

open-end denim |
The most popular
type of denim that results in a consistent yarn thickness. |
|
overalls |
A one piece
garment style using denim or canvas. It is a pant with a bib top
and suspenders shoulders. |
|
overdye |
A fabric dying
technique often used on dark indigo and black denim. |
|
pigment dyes |
Dyes without
affinity for fibre and therefore held to fabric with resins.
They are available in various colours and are used by fabric
dyers to create a fabric that will fade. |
|
pre-shrunk |
Jeans which are
sanforized, or pre-shrunk are guaranteed to further shrink - no
more than 2%. |
|
ring spun |
An older method of
machine spinning cotton into yarn with an emphasis on twisting,
not just stretching the fibres. It is slower and more expensive,
but produces stronger cotton. |
|
rinse denim |
Raw fabric that
has no washing procedure and is simply rinsed before selling. It
produces the toughest jeans. |
|
rise |
A tailoring term
that refers to the distance from the crotch seam to the top of
the waistband in pants. Rise will often be spoken of when
discussing how the jeans fits. |
