PAISLEY |
A complex pattern
based on a looped object that is wide and round on one end and
narrow and curled at the other. The pattern can be developed on
florals, geometrics, dots, etc. A paisley pattern usually contains
multiple colours. |

PATCHWORK |
A panel made of
pieces sewn together, especially pieces of different colours,
patterns, or textures. Handbags can have a patchwork quilt look,
made with fabrics, or they can have patchwork designs made with
different colours of leather and/or various textures of animal
hides. |

PATENT LEATHER |
Patent is high gloss
finish on leather. Thick leather is split into two or more layers
before use. The top layer, containing the natural grain is called
top grain. All other layers are splits. |

PATINA |
The finish, feel,
visual appearance, and character that leather has when used over a
period of time. Quality leather accessories are often designed to
achieve an attractive patina after use. Many people observe the
patina of used quality leather products to be more beautiful than
when they were new and unused. |

PEAU DE SOIE |
A satin with a dull
or matte finish. It is commonly used in evening bags. |

PEBBLED |
A texture that has a
bumpy texture like small pebbles. |

PIPING |
A tubular shaped trim
along exterior edges, that is decorative and also helps to keep
the exterior shape of a handbag or piece of luggage. |

POCKET |
A small section of
the interior of a handbag located on the side of a larger
compartment. |

|
A hinged cover or
flexible case for carrying loose papers, or notebooks - aka.
Briefcase. |

PULLTIE |
A thin strip of
fabric, leather, cord, or string that is woven through eyelets and
when pulled it gathers together the top of a handbag or
compartment in order to close it - aka. Drawstring. |

PVC |
The abbreviation for
polyvinyl chloride, which is a manmade material. |

QUILTED |
A handbag made of
soft leather or other soft exterior material with a batting
underneath and a topstitched pattern just like a quilt. |

RAFFIA |
A finely woven straw
used to make fashion handbags. |

RAWHIDE |
The un-tanned hide of
cattle or the hide/skin of other animals. |

RHINESTONES |
An imitation gem
stone with a high lustre made of glass, paste, or quartz.
Rhinestones are used to decorate both casual handbags and evening
bags, and can be attached to all sorts of materials from fine
fabrics to textured leathers. Often, rhinestones are used to
enhance ornamental beadwork and metal clasps on evening bags. |

RIVET |
A metal pin with a
head on one end and inserted through pieces of material to be
joined together and then hammered on the other end to form a head
on the other side. Rivets are often used on handbags to reinforce
the looped ends of a shoulder strap or carrying handle where it
attaches to the main body of the bag, or at corners where several
pieces of leather or other material come together such as at the
top corner of a compartment divider where it attaches to an
exterior panel. |
