JACQUARD A fabric with a woven design (versus a design printed on the fabric). A fabric with a jacquard design can vary from simple small patterns to elaborate multicoloured all-over patterns. Jacquard fabric is made with mechanical loom, and is named for the Frenchman who invented it - Joseph Jacquard. Many fashion accessories use this fabric to display corporate logos.
KELLY BAG A type of handbag made popular by Grace Kelly. It is hard-sided handbag with a triangular profile and has a hinged metal latch top and one carrying handle.
KNIT Needlework fabric made by intertwining yarn in a series of connected loops with two straight needles. Soft-sided handbags made with crochet needlework come in many different styles, colours, sizes, and textures because of the variety of stitches in crochet and knit needlework.
LACE A delicate fabric made of fine yarn or thread woven in an open web like pattern.
LAMBSKIN Also known as Sheepskin. This is a light, fine grained hide from sheep.
LAME A smooth fabric woven with metallic threads in gold or silver.
LATCH A closure that has a bar which fits into a notch or slot.
LEATHER A term for any tanned animal hide, but is used especially to describe cowhide. For example, when fashion accessories are stamped with "genuine leather", it means "genuine cowhide leather".
LEATHERETTE A thin supple synthetic leather with a texture like genuine leather. xGo Top
LINEN A fabric woven from flax. This fabric classically used for spring handbag styles.
LINING A material such as fabric or leather, sewn to form the inside compartments of a handbag, wallet or piece of luggage.
LIZARD SKIN A leather made from the skin of lizards. Like snake skins, lizard skins vary widely in colours, textures and patterns. Skins from smaller types of lizards have a similar "flaky" texture as snake skins, but skins form large lizards (such as alligators and crocodiles), have a strong "armor" texture and grain.
LOCK A device for holding, closing, or securing the contents of a handbag (or piece of luggage) or a specific compartment. On handbags, briefcases, and luggage, the locks are usually built into some sort of latch, and are commonly key locks or combination locks.
LOGO A characteristic mark that identifies the maker, designer, or manufacturer of a handbag or accessory. A logo can contain a word or letters, or a picture, or any combination, and is made to identify the designer and/or manufacturer of the fashion item.
LUGGAGE HANDLE A handle that has the same rigid shape as the handle of a suitcase. It is usually made of metal or hard plastic covered with leather or other durable material.
MESSENGER BAG A large bag with a long shoulder strap worn across the shoulders with a large fold-over flap at the front. This style bag was originally made to carry a large amount of printed material such as mail (by mail carriers) or newspapers (by paper boys) - hence the name "messenger" bag.
MONOGRAM A sign of identity unusually consisting of the combined initials of a name. For example; Louis Vuitton, uses an identifying monogram with the initials LV, Coco Chanel uses the initials CC, Gucci - GG, Fendi - FF, Michael Cromer Munchen - MCM, Donna Karan - DKNY, Calvin Klein - CK.
NAMEPLATE Usually is a metal plate with the designer name and / or logo, that is fastened to the interior or exterior of the handbag. Sometimes name plates can also be a piece of leather embossed with the designer name and / or logo, and sewn (or fastened) onto the exterior of the handbag.
NEEDLEPOINT Decorative needlework on canvas done with a diagonal stitch covering the entire surface of the canvas.
NORTH SOUTH This term describes a handbag shape which is longer in height than in width.
NUBUCK A leather-like material, partially man-made and partially genuine leather. It has the look, feel and breathability of genuine leather, but the durability of man-made synthetic leather.
NYLON Is considered to be the strongest synthetic fabric. It has a cool soft feeling and a high resistance to abrasion, stains, and is easy to clean.
OPEN POCKET A pocket of a handbag that does not have a closure at the top, such as; a snap, zipper, button, etc. xGo Top
ORGANISER A pocketbook with several types of compartments arranged to carry appointment books, notes, etc., along with personal items.
OSTRICH Leather made from the hides of ostriches. It durable and has a distinct "pimpled" texture from the ostrich feathers.
